Wellness is generally used to mean a healthy balance of the mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being. Wellness can also be described as “the constant, conscious pursuit of living life to its fullest potential.”

Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of, and making choices toward a more successful existence. This is consistent with a shift in focus away from treating illness as a core goal and promoting Wellness, and thus improving your quality of life. Following a Wellness program allows you to take increased responsibility for your health behaviors. People often enroll in a private wellness program to improve fitness, stop smoking, or to learn how to manage their weight. The behaviors in the pursuit of wellness often include many health related practices, such as natural therapies.

Wellness enhancement focuses on minimizing the effects of the three dimensions of stress:

  • Physical Stress
  • Chemical Stress
  • Mental Stress

These aspects of stress bring about chemical toxicity, cellular and systemic inflammation and depletion in the body’s anti-oxidant pathways. These have far-reaching consequences on DNA health, cellular repair and the body’s ability to protect and heal itself.

Wellness is seen as a luxury pursuit because it involves managing the body state after the basic needs of food, shelter and basic medical care have already been met. Many of the practices applied in the pursuit of wellness, in fact, are aimed at controlling the side effects of affluence, such as obesity and inactivity.

Despite it’s high-tech scientific basis, many of the core concepts are those of back-to basic practises – like regular exercise, stress-management and whole food “clean” eating that controls food and refined carbohydrate excess.
